2006 Performers

The list of Artists is provisional and is subject to additions and other changes.

Ljuba Kazarnovskaya
Soprano

"Her voice is dark in hue and alluringly smooth… a moving beautifully paced account of Tatiana's 'Letter Aria' and a final encounter with Onegin in which her turmoil was palpable", according to the New York Times.

Since her debut in 1992 at the Metropolitan Opera as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, and during the next two seasons as Desdemona in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of 'Otello' with Placido Domingo, and as Nadda in 'I Pagliacci' with Luciano Pavorotti, nothing but glowing accolades and audience ovations have accompanied the spectacular rise of this brilliantly gifted Russian soprano.

Ljuba Kazarnovskaya has been given many names: "Russian wonder", "the greatest Salome", "the sexiest voice in opera" and "the last muse of Herbert von Karajan". In addition to talent, she has artistic daring and a fondness for taking risks – the marks of a true artist. She exudes a triumphant, vital energy and is a veritable contemporary star. Her recordings sell out quickly and become hard to find, even though she has released recordings almost every year since 1986.

Russian fans only rarely have the pleasure of hearing her perform. In 2006 guests of Russian Rhapsody will be treated to this rare pleasure.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Patron: HRH The Duke of York

Formed by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has established a world-wide reputation for its performances: ‘…plays like a dream, with characterful wind soloists and much silvery, aristocratic string tone’ - The Times, August 2005. Its musical direction and development have been guided by a series of distinguished maestros including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Dorati, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Today, under the inspired leadership of Daniele Gatti (Music Director since 1996), the Orchestra continues to expand its international status whilst maintaining a deep commitment to its self-appointed role as Britain’s national orchestra.

The Orchestra is London-based - its current Royal Albert Hall season includes a number of spectacular large-scale works ranging from Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite and Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ to Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Orff’s Carmina Burana. The RPO’s London Residency is at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea, London’s newest concert venue, where forthcoming concerts will feature Leonard Slatkin, Chloë Hanslip and Evelyn Glennie.

As an international orchestra, the RPO has toured more than thirty countries in the last five years, including performances for the late Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, the President of China in Tiananmen Square and at the tenth anniversary celebration of Kazakhstan’s independence. The Orchestra was privileged to be invited to record the music for the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In addition to touring regularly throughout Europe, the RPO’s future plans include a month-long tour of the USA with Charles Dutoit in January 2006.
