GLOBAL SPORTS INDUSTRY CONGRESS 2012

Global Sport Industry CongressThe official ‘Russia House’ during the London Olympics – a stunning temporary venue in London’s Kensington Gardens – was the highly appropriate location for the Global Sports Industry Congress, Eventica’s established business event focusing on the international sports industry. This year, the event was focused solely on Russia as it embarks on an extraordinary decade of hosting major international sports events.

The event in 2012 took place on 2 August and was organised in association with our Lead Partner this year, PricewaterhouseCoopers, our Media Partner insidethegames.biz and our media sponsor, Eurosport. The opening session of the day set the tone and the core themes of the day: an overview of the major global sporting mega-events that will be hosted by Russia in the coming years, and an analysis of the key learnings from previous events that Russia can use to leverage its own preparations. Speakers in the keynote session included Alexander Zhukov, President, Russian Olympic Committee; Dmitry Chernyshenko, CEO, Sochi 2014 Organising Committee; Vladimir Leonov, Director General, Kazan 2013; Oleg Samartsev, Executive Director, Russian Rugby Federation; Robert Gruman, Advisory Practice Leader, PwC Russia and Alexey Smertin, Ambassador for the successful Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup Bid.

Later in the day, delegates and media guests heard from international commentators and players in the sports industry, including Paul Vaughan, CEO of England 2015 Rugby World Cup, and Sir John Armitt, Chairman of the UK’s Olympic Delivery Authority, who gave a fascinating insight into the planning, construction and delivery of the London 2012 Games.

The Global Sports Industry Congress launched in London in 2009, and has thus far focused on opportunities in ‘emerging sports nations’. This year, we continued this theme, with our focus on Russia. Over the next decade Russia steps into the global spotlight as host of some of the world’s greatest sporting events such as Sochi Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2014, Formula One Grand Prix in 2014 and FIFA World Cup in 2018.

At the Global Sports Industry Congress in 2012, sports sector experts from around the world will have the chance to learn about the latest in the fast-developing Russian sports industry, and to meet leading figures who are driving this development.

A powerful networking opportunity, the Congress brings together a cross-section of all the major interest groups in the sports industry, including games organisers, national ministries, corporate sponsors, sports professional service providers, contractors, suppliers, journalists and other opinion formers.

Over the years, the Congress has attracted a leading line-up of speakers from the international sports industry and the wider sports world, including Sir Craig Reedie, Executive Board Member, IOC; Paul Deighton, CEO, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympics (LOCOG; Faruk Nafız Özak, State Minister for Youth and Sport, Republic of Turkey; Jeanine Pires, Director, Rio 2016; Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and many other key players.

In short, the Global Sports Industry Congress is an international forum for experts from the sports industry to come together to focus on trends in this multi-faceted sector.
